Discipline
Without discipline, it’s nigh on impossible to reach your potential. In order to live your best life, you need the ability to control your behavior. Sometimes, that means doing the work whether you feel like it or not. Others, it means saying “no” to things that do not serve you.
Tier
What Is Self Discipline?
Self discipline is the ability to dictate one’s own actions in the face of resistance, whether internal or external. It applies to both taking action you know is good for you and avoiding action that you know is bad for you. In almost every case, more discipline leads to a better life.
Why Discipline?
Self discipline is one of the great separators. It’s simple, really. Those who have discipline tend to succeed in whatever they do. Those who don’t, struggle.
I don’t claim to be an expert on anything I write about.
Hell, I hardly claim to be an expert on myself. 😂😂😂
These breakdowns are largely for me. I use them to record and reference. Unlike most others on this site though, this self discipline page might actually be useful to the outside observer.
No promises. You can tell me.
Executing Everyday
Consistent daily action is one of the foundations of success. Self discipline ensures that things get done.
Success Superpower
Our society often makes successful people out to be superheroes. 9 times out of 10, they are just disciplined.
Sustained Drive
Momentum doesn’t maintain itself. The endurance to make continued progress demands determination.
Ignoring Circumstance
Don’t just let life happen to you. With discipline, you can transcend external conditions via your own internal power.
Doing It Anyway
If it’s important, motivation doesn’t matter. Whether they feel like it or not, high performers do what is needed.
Taking the Next Step
Today, it’s so easy to get sidetracked. Discipline helps you focus on the task before you and do it until it is done.
There’s a lot that goes into developing high levels of discipline. Here’s a quick look at what the self discipline journey has been like for me.
Learn with Me
I’ve come quite a long way.
However, I still have quite a long way to go.
I’m always looking for ways to squeeze more out of myself. Cultivating greater and greater levels of discipline is one of the main ways I look to do so. I know it’s vital to my goals.
Everyday, I wage war against Distraction and Procrastination because I understand the value of staying on-task.
It hasn’t always been that way though.
Becoming a disciplined person didn’t come easy at first. By nature, I’m fairly free spirited. If not for my foray into Entrepreneurship, I probably wouldn’t have come to value discipline the way I do. Now, it’s an addiction.
Discipline is crucial to my Productivity, as demonstrated by This Site.
My Experience
I’ve struggled to develop discipline for a long time.
True: I’m more disciplined than I used to be.
However, there are still periods where I fall of the wagon completely. That’s what I have to eliminate.
I value discipline but that doesn’t mean I like it.
In my opinion, discipline is one of the highest virtues. Yet, it is one of the most difficult to cultivate.
The ultimate goal is to make discipline my default state. It’s tough, but I am determined to get there through a combination of will power and habit development.
I look forward to rewriting this once I make it happen.

Good Life Foundation
Discipline is a difference maker. It may even be the number one thing that separates high achievers from the wannabes. The G.O.A.T.s often swear by it.
Where Discipline Fits in a Good Life
Discipline is a major piece of the Achievement puzzle and one of the most powerful Character traits.
For me, it’s a “Tier 4” concept, on the same level as Ambition, Integrity, Work Ethic, and Conscientiousness.
However, it probably supersedes them all.

Becoming Legendary: My 2022 Goals
I'm fairly confident 2022 is going to be the most successful year of my life so far. I'm writing this post to help guarantee that. Obviously, I can't control the future. But I can set intentions and create a plan of action. That's what Goal Setting is all about. So...
Developing Discipline for a Better Life
For discipline newbies:
Let’s start with the best advice up front.
Just get started.
Self discipline isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you develop and then maintain. Sure, good parenting or joining the military can help you. But it always comes down to you.
Contrary to modern rhetoric, discipline is one of the highest forms of self-love. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give your present and future self.
Jocko Willink says:
“Discipline equals freedom.”
While this might seem counterintuitive at first, he is right. Discipline lays the path to a life of true freedom. You can count on it to propel you to get done what needs to be done, regardless of outside factors.
It may even be the only thing you can count on to do so.
Unfortunately, many of us have a negative association with the word discipline. Part of that may be because one of its meanings is synonymous with “punishment.” For example, we discipline misbehaving children.
However, even when we separate it from that idea, it can still be seen in a negative light. We often consider discipline in the light of doing things we don’t want to do. Many of us see the idea as limiting and repressive. This perspective invites dread and resentment, which can lead to different forms of resistance.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Instead, you can reframe the idea of self discipline in a more empowering way.
The key is to connect with your deeper Motivation and Goals. That way, you can shift tasks to a more appealing viewpoint.
From:
Don’t want to do but have to do.
To:
Don’t feel like doing but want to do.
“Don’t feel like doing” is easier to overcome than “don’t want to do.”
This distinction is more insignificant than it may seem at first glance. How we frame boring, tedious, or otherwise unpleasant tasks often has a major impact on how likely we are to get them done. Sure, it still won’t make them fun. But it is much more effective than telling your brain you don’t want to do them.
Ultimately though, becoming more disciplined isn’t really about feeling good. It’s about becoming your best self. And indeed, that overused (and misused) cliché of “living your best life.”
As Abraham Lincoln put it:
“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”
High achievers know that the ability to Delay Gratification is one of the best predictors of success. Ironically, we live in a time when all of our desires are just a mouse click or smartphone swipe away. In this world of instant gratification, self discipline becomes even more of a superpower.
Self discipline is the undisputed king among the Habits and Character traits of High Performance. Self Control is the king’s brother and top advisor. All other virtues are simply nobles in the royal court. This includes Focus, Consistency, Accountability, Grit, Determination, Internal Locus of Control, and even the fabled Antifragility.
On the other side of the equation, Distraction and Procrastination cower in the conqueror-king’s presence.
Situation and circumstance are no match for discipline.
It allows you to transcend external circumstances with internal strength. It is essentially the art of forcing yourself to do things, no matter how you feel. This makes it one of the most effective traits in helping you Overcome Adversity.
Athletes, Entrepreneurs, and other High Performers know this all too well.
Self discipline often triggers an action-taking flywheel. Once you get it started, it basically runs on it’s own. This has a lot to do with how our brains are wired.
What’s more, discipline is contagious across different facets of life. When you cultivate discipline in one area, it tends to spread across others. That is to say, it becomes a part of your Self Identity. You begin to view yourself as someone who gets things done and can be relied upon. In turn, this encourages more Confidence and Self Belief.
So start by making promises to yourself—then keeping them.
Admittedly, this is not always an easy task. There is nothing wrong with starting small at first. For example, if you want to increase your Productivity, you’re better off committing to 30 minutes of Deep Work per day than 8 hours.
Instantaneous radical change is rare, and usually requires a catalyst in the form of some crisis (ie. a terminal health diagnosis). That’s not to say it’s impossible. It’s just that starting off with more realistic targets sets you up for success. Get the ball rolling first. Then, build momentum to tackle larger challenges.
Over time, you’ll be amazed at who you can become.
How to Cultivate Discipline Step-By-Step
01
It Starts with "Why?"
Discipline is far more powerful than Motivation. But motivation is typically the precursor. Most of us need it in order to make discipline a priority in the first place. Uncovering your deepest desires is usually the first stop on the road to sustainable discipline.
02
Embrace Commitment
Without Commitment, the full potential of any discipline you do develop go will go untapped. Committing to specific Goals adds focus to your actions. Allow the pursuit of your dreams to permeate your decision making. In turn, this will reinforce your resolve.
03
Power Through
In the beginning, maintaining discipline often requires copious amounts of Willpower. Grit your teeth and bear it. Procrastination will rear its ugly head, trying to slow you down. Distractions will arise, trying to knock you off the path completely. Don’t let them.
04
Brainwash Yourself
With the correct inputs, your brain will make discipline the default. Control your environment, the media you consume, and other things that influence your Mindset. Then make use of tools like Journaling, Affirmations, Meditation, Visualization, and Moticuts.
05
Daily Practice
Daily Practice is one of the most rewarding ways to utilize your discipline. Few things can give you such a strong return on time invested. Consistency is an extremely powerful force for success. Choose your daily actions with intention and get better everyday.
Remember: just start the journey. As soon as you decide to commit to a disciplined lifestyle, you’re ahead of 90% of the population.

Morning
Routine
When you ask high achievers about their most important habits, many of them start with their morning routine. Years of habit tracking has confirmed it for me as well. Getting my morning right is the single most important thing I can do to guarantee I have a productive day.

It is possible to develop discipline for discipline’s sake. It just isn’t probable. The motivation derived from proper goal setting has been my biggest driver toward a more disciplined lifestyle. Connecting with your why’s, unleashes a fountain of will you won’t find elsewhere.
How I Use Discipline to Create the Life I want
If you haven’t noticed, I take this stuff seriously.
You don’t have to do it like me. But maybe you wanna know. So I guess I’ll tell you. You might have picked some of it up by reading through this page or clicking on some of the links.
I’ll spell it all out here.
Daily Reminders
Discipline is a key ingredient to consistent performance. As such, it’s something that must be fostered day-by-day. That’s one of the big reasons I am so intentional about my daily Habits. I use Affirmations, Visualization, Journaling, and others tools in order to connect to my goals and remind myself who I want to be and what I want to achieve.
Maintaining Streaks
Gamification is one of my favorite Personal Growth tools. I don’t make a whole RPG out of my life, but I am a big believer in Habit Tracking. For me, turning target habits into daily streaks works especially well. That’s how I made practices like making my bed and morning movement everyday things. It’s also the basis for my Content Challenges.
Achievement Autopilot
For me, discipline is mostly a means to an end. Sure, there is value in discipline for discipline’s sake. But I don’t know if I would have the will to prioritize it if I didn’t I have enormous Goals. The things I want out of life require daily action. I cultivate discipline so that it is easier to focus on the process, making the incremental progress an inevitability.
Distraction Allergy
Cutting out Distractions is one of the main ways I limit Procrastination and make progress inevitable. I go for a minimalist approach, especially when when it comes to my workspace. I also try to avoid attention-splitters like multitasking and push notifications. Controlling my environment allows me to save my Willpower for life’s true obstacles.
Public Declarations
Many of the people I admire recommend mentors and accountability partners. I am fairly introverted and work from home. Therefore, I don’t really a network that lends itself well to such relationships. As a substitute, I like to announce my plans to the world. In addition, I use This Site as a way to make myself answerable to my sons’ future selves.
